A 30-Day Study Plan to Pass HSK 1 — Self-Study Roadmap
HSK 1 is the beginner level, with a set vocabulary of about 150 words. Pinyin is printed alongside the characters, and the focus is on listening and reading pinyin. Because the workload is small, about 30 minutes a day for 30 days is enough to give you a realistic shot through self-study. Here’s a concrete four-week roadmap.
Can you really do it in 30 days?
Yes — HSK 1 is the quickest level to finish. The vocabulary is around 150 words and the grammar is limited to the basics. What decides the outcome, then, is whether you keep at it daily. A little every day beats cramming.
For the level itself, see What is HSK 1; for the wider context, see the HSK guide.
The 30-day roadmap
Week 1: Build a pronunciation base
Start by focusing on pinyin and tones. Since HSK 1 prints pinyin, your first goal is to be able to read it and hear it. Learn high-frequency greetings like 你好(nǐ hǎo) (“hello”) and 谢谢(xièxie) (“thank you”) out loud, together with their sound.
Weeks 2–3: The 150 words + basic patterns
This is the core. Learn the ~150 set words with example sentences, using the memorization tips. Get everyday words like 今天(jīntiān) (“today”) and 喜欢(xǐhuan) (“to like”) to the point where you can use them in short sentences. Alongside this, review the “subject + verb + object” basics in word order.
- Daily target: around 10 new words + a review of yesterday’s.
- Read new words aloud inside example sentences to make them stick.
Week 4: Past papers and review
- Do official past papers under time: get used to the format and the listening pace.
- Collect the words you missed or couldn’t hear, and drill them in the remaining days.
- In the final stretch, don’t add new material — lock in what you already know.
A daily routine
- A fixed slot (say, 30 minutes, morning or night) is what keeps it going.
- Go “listen → imitate → words → short sentence”, always routing through sound.
- Listening carries a lot of weight, so catch some Chinese audio in spare moments.
Turn unknown words into review
When a word stumps you, look it up and file it for later. Keep a running “words I don’t know yet” list and cycle back through it across the 30 days — spaced review is what makes a small set of words stick for good.
Summary
- HSK 1 is a ~150-word beginner level: 30 min/day for 30 days is a realistic target.
- Split it by week: pronunciation → 150 words + basic patterns → past papers.
- Consistency wins. Route through sound daily, and cycle unknown words into review.
