Chinese Small Talk — Keep a Conversation Going Naturally
Avoid turning small talk into an interview. Answer briefly, add one detail, then return a question.
Colleague:
(Nǐ píngshí xǐhuan zuò shénme?)
Learner:
(Wǒ xǐhuan kàn diànyǐng. Nǐ ne?)
Colleague:
(Wǒ yě xǐhuan. Zuìjìn yǒu shénme hǎokàn de diànyǐng ma?)
(Nǐ ne?) is a compact, natural way to say “How about you?”
Conversation: leave small talk comfortably
(Wǒ xiān qù ná bēi kāfēi, nǐ yào ma?)
(Hǎo a, xièxie. Děng yíxià zài liáo.)
(Hǎo, méi wèntí.)
Let the conversation breathe
Small talk does not need a dramatic ending. A simple offer, thanks, or 等一下再聊 (děng yíxià zài liáo) (“Let’s talk again in a moment”) keeps the connection open while respecting that both people may need to move on.
Notice what the other person chooses to talk about and stay with that topic for one extra turn. A comment about food, weather, a film, or the event you are both attending is usually safer and more natural than an abrupt personal question.
Related: everyday conversation for the openings, and connecting ideas for keeping a topic alive.
