Chinese Tone Phrase Drills: From Single Syllables to Sentences

HSK Study Notes Editorial Team ·

Even if you can say the four tones alone, the pitch can go flat over two syllables. In these drills you learn tones not as re-memorised numbers but as the shape of sound in a short unit. Say each row three times alternating with a model, and record the fourth.

Two-syllable base shapes

Tone sequencePractice wordListening / saying focus
1 + 1妈妈 (māma, “mum”)keep the second light, not heavy
2 + 4学校 (xuéxiào, “school”)after the rise, drop the second short
3 + 4买菜 (mǎi cài, “to buy groceries”)hold low, then drop the next clearly
4 + 4现在 (xiànzài, “now”)drop both short, no gap between
2 + 3朋友 (péngyou, “friend”)add the second as a neutral tone

Phrases with tone changes

SpellingThe form to feelAim of the drill
你好 (nǐ hǎo, “hello”)close to ní hǎoraise the first third tone to connect
不对 (bú duì, “not right”)bú duì (bù) before a fourth tone
一个 (yí ge, “one [item]“)yí ge (yī) before a fourth tone
很好 (hěn hǎo, “very good”)close to hén hǎodo not flatten two third tones

You do not need to rewrite the pinyin to remember it. When you see the dictionary form, shape the mouth to the surrounding tones. If thinking about the change makes you stop, learn the word as one sound first.

Widen to short sentences

These three sentences suit saying in one breath while keeping the tone movement:

  • 我想买水果 (wǒ xiǎng mǎi shuǐguǒ, “I want to buy fruit”).
  • 你今天忙不忙 (nǐ jīntiān máng bu máng, “are you busy today?”)?
  • 这个很好吃 (zhège hěn hǎochī, “this is delicious”).

Check only one thing per sentence in the recording. For the first, “did the two third tones in 我想 (wǒ xiǎng) connect?”; for the second, “did I place (bu) lightly?” If the tone-change rules feel vague, go back to tone sandhi.
