Chinese Vocabulary Workbook — Situations, Listening, Speaking, Reading and Review

Pletec LLC Editorial Team ·

This workbook turns vocabulary knowledge into four usable skills: read it, hear it, say it, and write it. Work through one situation at a time. Hide the answer before you check it, then return only the uncertain item to tomorrow’s review pile.

Situation vocabulary: make a useful sentence first

Do not wait until you know every noun for a situation. A short request with 这个 (zhège), 那个 (nàge), or a time word is already a usable turn in conversation.

Listening vocabulary drill

For each line, listen or ask a text-to-speech tool to read it before looking at the characters. Say what you heard, then check the text.

  1. 我还没决定。 (Wǒ hái méi juédìng.) 2. 可以改时间吗? (Kěyǐ gǎi shíjiān ma?) 3. 我想预约医生。 (Wǒ xiǎng yùyuē yīshēng.) 4. 这个时间很方便。 (Zhège shíjiān hěn fāngbiàn.) 5. 我听懂了。 (Wǒ tīngdǒng le.)

Mark O if you could not identify the sound, M if you heard it but missed the meaning, and C if you knew the word but not its partner. Tomorrow, O becomes a sound→meaning card; M becomes a contrast card; C becomes a blank-chunk card.

Speaking vocabulary drill

Use the following frames three times each. Make the final version true for you and record it.

  • 我想……。 (Wǒ xiǎng…….)
  • 我还没……。 (Wǒ hái méi…….)
  • 我觉得……。 (Wǒ juéde…….)
  • 我需要……。 (Wǒ xūyào…….)
  • 我已经……。 (Wǒ yǐjīng……le.)

If a long sentence fails, make it shorter instead of translating more words. Start with 我想去。 (Wǒ xiǎng qù.) Then extend it to 我想去看电影。 (Wǒ xiǎng qù kàn diànyǐng.) A sentence you can retrieve is more valuable than a long sentence you can only recognize.

Reading vocabulary drill

Read the lines once without a dictionary. Underline only the word that repeats or blocks the message.

我想换一个房间因为这个房间不太安静可以帮我换吗
(Wǒ xiǎng huàn yí ge fángjiān, yīnwèi zhège fángjiān bú tài ānjìng. Kěyǐ bāng wǒ huàn ma?)

You can infer that (huàn) concerns changing something. Confirm the sound, then save 换一个房间 (huàn yí ge fángjiān) and one sentence. Do not turn every unknown character into a separate card; save the chunk that will help you recognize the next similar message.

Error analysis table

Your answerWhat it revealsReplacement prompt
解决时间 (jiějué shíjiān)The verb partner is wrong.“change the time” → 改时间 (gǎi shíjiān)
知道他 (zhīdào tā)Information and person were mixed.“know a person” → 认识他 (rènshi tā)
You read 预约 (yùyuē) but cannot say it.Sound is not connected to characters.预约yùyuē
You know 方便 (fāngbiàn) but cannot respond to a schedule. The situation cue is missing.“Is this time convenient?” → 这个时间方便吗? (Zhège shíjiān fāngbiàn ma?)

Keep only one diagnosis per missed answer. The first place you stopped tells you which prompt to use next.

Final test

Without notes, do all five tasks.

  1. Read 方便 (fāngbiàn), 觉得 (juéde), 预约 (yùyuē), 解决 (jiějué), and 选择 (xuǎnzé) aloud and give a core meaning.
  2. Make a natural chunk for each word.
  3. Say “I have not decided yet,” “Can we change the time?”, and “I need to book a doctor.”
  4. Use two of the words in a true sentence about your week.
  5. Listen to your recording the next day and state the meaning before looking at the text.

Score one point for sound and meaning, two for a natural chunk, and three for each understandable personal response. A score is a map: move only the missed items to tomorrow’s review pile.

HSK review route

Choose five entries from your current HSK vocabulary level. Add sound, one chunk, one personal sentence, and R/L/S. Use this workbook’s final test before choosing the next five. The list is a map for finding useful words, not a race to finish rows.
