Natural Chinese Fillers — Buy Time Without Sounding Lost

Pletec LLC Editorial Team ·

Fluency is partly about managing thinking time. A short filler is better than rushing into the wrong sentence, but use it sparingly: it should support your point, not replace it.

ExpressionPinyinNatural function
Èn…“Um / let me think”
就是Jiùshì…Introduce or clarify a point
Zěnme shuō ne…“How can I put this…?”
其实Qíshí…Gently correct an assumption
反正Fǎnzhèng…“In any case” — use only when the conclusion is clear

Conversation: take a moment, then answer

(Nǐ juéde huàn gōngzuò zěnmeyàng?)
(Èn, zěnme shuō ne, wǒ xiǎng xiān kànkan jīhuì.)
(Nǐ bǐjiào zàiyì shénme?)

The useful part is the complete thought after the filler. Try to land it within one breath.

Conversation: correct softly

(Nǐ bù xǐhuan zhège ānpái ma?)
(Qíshí bú shì bù xǐhuan, wǒ zhǐshì dānxīn shíjiān bú gòu.)

其实 (qíshí) often means “actually” or “to be honest”, but it can sound like a correction. Pair it with a calm explanation.

Practice

Answer a surprising question three times. Begin once with (èn), once with 怎么说呢 (zěnme shuō ne), and once without a filler. Keep the version that lets you sound most present—not the one with the most filler words.

Related: clarifying for when buying time is not enough, and small talk for low-stakes practice.

By the end of this chapter, you can say

(Jiùshì, wǒ de yìsi shì…)

Practical note for this chapter

Move beyond set situations: opinions, negotiation, professional presentation and regional nuance. In this chapter, practice giving a short response and then checking what matters.

Use it in context

(Nǐ juéde huàn gōngzuò zěnmeyàng?)

(Jiùshì, wǒ de yìsi shì…)

Phrase map for this chapter

Question or situation
(Nǐ juéde huàn gōngzuò zěnmeyàng?)
Central response
(Jiùshì, wǒ de yìsi shì…)
Another natural way to say it
(Zěnme shuō ne, wǒ xiǎng xiān kànkan jīhuì.)
Use this variation in a situation you genuinely expect to handle.
How to use it
Listen to the model once, then say it again with one detail from your own situation.

Turn the model into three conversation turns

(Nǐ juéde huàn gōngzuò zěnmeyàng?)
(Jiùshì, wǒ de yìsi shì…)
(Zěnme shuō ne, wǒ xiǎng xiān kànkan jīhuì.)

Before acting, check the point most likely to cause a misunderstanding. This dialogue is for practice. For important decisions, confirm official guidance as well.

A useful variation

Keep the same purpose, then change the person, time or place to make it your own.

(Zěnme shuō ne, wǒ xiǎng xiān kànkan jīhuì.)

Use this variation in a situation you genuinely expect to handle.

Listen to the model once, then say it again with one detail from your own situation.

A common trap

For important details, do not decide from what you think you heard; check written information when needed.

(Tiánchōng yǔ zhǐ yòng lái zhēngqǔ sīkǎo shíjiān, hòumiàn yào jiē wánzhěng yìsi.)

This dialogue is for practice. For important decisions, confirm official guidance as well.

Three-step practice

  1. Open the situation in one short phrase
  2. Say the central response
  3. Add one detail of your own
