Chinese Vocabulary by Situation — Build a Usable Set for Daily Life
Themed vocabulary is useful only when it lets you complete a purpose. A list of twenty restaurant nouns does not help as much as one request you can say under pressure. Start from the next situation you expect to meet, choose a small set of chunks, and make one true sentence before adding more words.
The five-word situation set
For each situation, collect at most five items: one action, one object, one question, one repair phrase, and one personal sentence. This keeps review small enough to repeat by sound as well as by sight.
| Situation | Action chunk | Question | Repair phrase | Personal sentence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| food | 点这个 diǎn zhège | 你推荐什么? Nǐ tuījiàn shénme? | 不要太辣。 Bú yào tài là. | 我想点这个。 Wǒ xiǎng diǎn zhège. |
| transport | 在这儿下车 zài zhèr xià chē | 地铁站在哪儿? Dìtiě zhàn zài nǎr? | 我迷路了。 Wǒ mílù le. | 我在这儿下车。 Wǒ zài zhèr xià chē. |
| appointment | 预约医生 yùyuē yīshēng | 这个时间方便吗? Zhège shíjiān fāngbiàn ma? | 可以改时间吗? Kěyǐ gǎi shíjiān ma? | 我还没决定。 Wǒ hái méi juédìng. |
| shopping | 看看这个 kànkan zhège | 有别的颜色吗? Yǒu biéde yánsè ma? | 有点儿贵。 Yǒudiǎnr guì. | 我可以试一下吗? Wǒ kěyǐ shì yíxià ma? |
| study/work | 解决问题 jiějué wèntí | 你能再说一遍吗? Nǐ néng zài shuō yí biàn ma? | 我没听懂。 Wǒ méi tīngdǒng. | 我需要一点时间。 Wǒ xūyào yìdiǎn shíjiān. |
| health | 看医生 kàn yīshēng | 哪儿不舒服? Nǎr bù shūfu? | 我对这个过敏。 Wǒ duì zhège guòmǐn. | 我头疼。 Wǒ tóuténg. |
Say the Chinese chunks aloud before translating them. Then choose the line you are most likely to need this week. It is better to make 我想预约医生 (Wǒ xiǎng yùyuē yīshēng) automatic than to recognize ten medical terms that never enter a sentence.
Pronunciation and listening routine
Use one short line for three passes. First listen without characters. Second, read the characters and imitate the rhythm. Third, hide the text again and give the meaning.
可以改时间吗?
Kěyǐ gǎi shíjiān ma?
Can we change the time?
If you hear shíjiān but cannot connect it to time, mark M for meaning. If you see 时间 (shíjiān) but cannot say shíjiān, mark O for sound. If you say 解决时间 (jiějué shíjiān) when you need “change the time,” mark C for collocation. Each mark creates a different tomorrow card.
Expand a speaking frame, not a word list
Take a minimal frame and replace one slot three times.
| Frame | First change | Second change | Third change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 我想点这个。 Wǒ xiǎng diǎn zhège. | 我想点那个。 Wǒ xiǎng diǎn nàge. | 我想点面条。 Wǒ xiǎng diǎn miàntiáo. | 我想点一杯茶。 Wǒ xiǎng diǎn yì bēi chá. |
| 我需要一点时间。 Wǒ xūyào yìdiǎn shíjiān. | 我需要帮助。 Wǒ xūyào bāngzhù. | 我需要看医生。 Wǒ xūyào kàn yīshēng. | 我需要休息。 Wǒ xūyào xiūxi. |
| 这个时间方便吗? Zhège shíjiān fāngbiàn ma? | 明天方便吗? Míngtiān fāngbiàn ma? | 下午方便吗? Xiàwǔ fāngbiàn ma? | 你现在方便吗? Nǐ xiànzài fāngbiàn ma? |
Record the third version. Recording is not for judging your accent; it creates an audio card you can understand tomorrow before looking at the characters.
Similar words inside a situation
Situation vocabulary often contains words that look interchangeable in English.
| Do not collapse | Useful boundary | Contrast |
|---|---|---|
| 知道 / 认识 zhīdào / rènshi | information / a person | 我不知道地址。/我不认识他。 Wǒ bù zhīdào dìzhǐ. / Wǒ bú rènshi tā. |
| 想 / 要 xiǎng / yào | a wish or consideration / a firmer want or plan | 我想想。/我要这个。 Wǒ xiǎngxiang. / Wǒ yào zhège. |
| 听见 / 听懂 tīngjiàn / tīngdǒng | hear a sound / understand it | 我听见了。/我听懂了。 Wǒ tīngjiàn le. / Wǒ tīngdǒng le. |
| 方便 / 便宜 fāngbiàn / piányi | convenient / inexpensive | 这个时间方便。/这个很便宜。 Zhège shíjiān fāngbiàn. / Zhège hěn piányi. |
Do not memorize every nuance at once. Choose one contrast that protects a sentence you need. For an appointment, 方便 (fāngbiàn) versus 便宜 (piányi) matters because a convenient time is not a cheap time.
Situation test and repair
Without notes, respond to these prompts in Chinese.
- You want to order this item.
- You need to change an appointment time.
- You did not understand and need the speaker to repeat it.
- You are getting off here.
- You need to see a doctor.
Model answers: 我想点这个。/可以改时间吗?/请再说一遍。/我在这儿下车。/我需要看医生。
Wǒ xiǎng diǎn zhège. / Kěyǐ gǎi shíjiān ma? / Qǐng zài shuō yí biàn. / Wǒ zài zhèr xià chē. / Wǒ xūyào kàn yīshēng.
If you miss a line, write the first reason only: sound, meaning, chunk, situation, or personal sentence. Return that exact prompt tomorrow. After you can answer all five, select five related words from the relevant HSK vocabulary level and build the next situation set.
Weekly handoff
At the end of the week, move a situation only when you can do all four tasks: read its chunks, understand them when heard, answer its main purpose, and change one detail for yourself. Mark the set R/L/S plus “changeable.” A phrase that is only recited is not yet ready for a new review interval.
