From HSK Words to Real Chinese Conversation

Pletec LLC Editorial Team ·

Knowing a word is not yet the same as being able to join a conversation. Build a three-part speaking card for every useful word: a question, your answer, and one follow-up.

WordQuestionNatural reply
(Nǐ xǐhuan chī shénme?) (Wǒ zuìjìn hěn xǐhuan chī miàn.)
(Nǐ juéde zěnmeyàng?) (Wǒ juéde hái búcuò, búguò yǒudiǎn guì.)
(Nǐ míngtiān fāngbiàn ma?) (Xiàwǔ bǐjiào fāngbiàn.)

Conversation: make one word do three jobs

(Nǐ juéde zhè jiā diàn zěnmeyàng?)
(Wǒ juéde bú cuò, jiùshì rén yǒudiǎn duō.)
(Nà wǒmen zǎodiǎn qù ba.)

就是 (jiùshì) here is not the literal English “just”. It gently introduces the one reservation: “It is good; the only thing is that it gets busy.”

Conversation: rescue a memorized answer

(Nǐ zhōumò xǐhuan zuò shénme?)
(Wǒ xǐhuan kàn diànyǐng. Nǐ ne?)
(Wǒ xǐhuan chūqù zǒuzou.)

Do not stop at the textbook sentence. Add 你呢 (Nǐ ne?) or ask one specific question. That tiny turn keeps the conversation shared.

A five-minute conversion drill

  1. Pick three words you already know.
  2. Say one question with each word.
  3. Answer with a detail: time, place, reason, or preference.
  4. Finish with a follow-up question.

Your target is not a long speech. It is one comfortable two-turn exchange.

Related: a short practice method turns this into a routine, and core patterns gives you the frames to drop words into.

By the end of this chapter, you can say

(Nǐ xǐhuan chī shénme? Wǒ xǐhuan chī miàn.)
