Turn Chinese Phrases into Conversation — A Short Practice Method
Most people who “know” a phrase know it in one direction only: they can recognize it on a page. Speaking asks for something harder — producing it while someone waits, and then handling whatever comes back. That gap is what this routine is for.
Do not stop at one useful line. Practice a question, an answer and one follow-up, so the phrase is available under pressure rather than only when you are calm.
Conversation: practice in three-turn units
A single sentence has nowhere to go. Three turns force you to plan a reply, which is where real conversation actually breaks down.
Server: 你想吃什么?
(Nǐ xiǎng chī shénme?)
Customer: 我想吃面。多少钱?
(Wǒ xiǎng chī miàn. Duōshao qián?)
Server: 三十块。
(Sānshí kuài.)
Then rehearse the version where it does not go to plan. The turn you have not prepared for is the one that stops you.
Server: 不好意思,这个卖完了。
(Bù hǎoyìsi, zhège mài wán le.)
Customer: 有没有别的?
(Yǒu méiyǒu biéde?)
Server: 有面,有米饭。
(Yǒu miàn, yǒu mǐfàn.)
Customer: 那我要一份面。
(Nà wǒ yào yí fèn miàn.)
A three-minute routine
- Read the exchange aloud once, at whatever speed keeps the tones intact.
- Cover the Chinese and produce your line from the English situation alone.
- Change one word, say it again, and record yourself.
- Play the recording back once and note the single word that sounded worst.
The dialogue above has its own playback and recording controls, so step 3 needs nothing but the page you are on: pick a role, listen to the model, then record your own turn.
Step 2 is the one people skip. Reading aloud feels productive but rehearses recognition; covering the text is what builds retrieval.
Change one word, not the whole sentence
Take a frame you already trust and move only the last element. Three passes is enough.
我要一份面。 (Wǒ yào yí fèn miàn.) — I’ll have one portion of noodles.
Swap 面 (miàn, noodles) for 米饭 (mǐfàn, rice) and 饺子 (jiǎozi, dumplings), then change the number: 我要两份。 (Wǒ yào liǎng fèn.) A number cannot sit directly in front of the noun, so the measure word never disappears — but it does change with the noun. Order a coffee and 份 (fèn) gives way to 杯 (bēi): 我要一杯咖啡。 (Wǒ yào yì bēi kāfēi.) If that rule is still shaky, Chinese measure words covers it.
Rebuilding one flexible sentence on three separate days is worth more than memorizing a long list once. If you want the spacing handled for you rather than guessed, see spaced repetition.
Say less than your English brain wants to
English rewards long sentences with clauses stacked inside them: “The place we went to yesterday was better than this one.” Mandarin does have relative clauses, but they are built in front of the noun with 的 (de), which is hard to assemble while someone is waiting. Translating the English structure directly is how a beginner sentence stalls halfway through.
Mandarin conversation is comfortable with short clauses in sequence instead. Say it in two pieces:
昨天我们去了一家餐厅。那家比这家好。
(Zuótiān wǒmen qù le yì jiā cāntīng. Nà jiā bǐ zhè jiā hǎo.)
Same information, including the comparison, with nothing to assemble mid-air. When you feel a sentence growing, stop at the first natural break and start a new one — the pause reads as normal speech, not as a mistake.
Rehearse the recovery, not just the script
Every practice block should include one turn where you did not understand. Otherwise you rehearse the easy path and improvise the hard one.
- 我没听懂。请再说一遍。 (Wǒ méi tīng dǒng. Qǐng zài shuō yí biàn.) — I didn’t catch that. Please say it again.
- 你会说英语吗? (Nǐ huì shuō Yīngyǔ ma?) — Do you speak English? (A fallback, not an opener.)
Practice these until they come out without hesitation. A learner who can repair a conversation in Mandarin gets further than one with a bigger vocabulary who goes silent. The full set is in clarifying in Chinese.
Keep a two-line record
After each session, write down the word you could not retrieve and the turn that surprised you. Nothing else — a long log stops getting written by the third day.
Start the next session from that exact weak point rather than from the easiest sentence in the set. Reviewing what you already say well is comfortable and slow; the note is what keeps the practice pointed at what is actually missing.
Takeaway
- Drill three turns at a time, including the reply you did not expect.
- Cover the Chinese and produce it from the situation — recognition is not production.
- Move one word per repetition, and change the measure word along with the noun.
- Break long English-shaped sentences into two short Chinese ones.
- Rehearse repair phrases as seriously as the script.

By the end of this chapter, you can say
我要一瓶水。
Practical note for this chapter
Open a conversation, form a useful sentence, ask for clarification, and practice aloud. In this chapter, practice giving a short response and then checking what matters.
Use it in context
A: 你想要什么?
B: 我要一瓶水。
Phrase map for this chapter
- Question or situation
- 你想要什么?
- Central response
- 我要一瓶水。
- Another natural way to say it
- 请给我一瓶水。
- Use this variation in a situation you genuinely expect to handle.
- How to use it
- Listen to the model once, then say it again with one detail from your own situation.
Turn the model into three conversation turns
- 1. Open the situation你想要什么?
- 2. Say the central response我要一瓶水。
- 3. Add an alternative请给我一瓶水。
Before acting, check the point most likely to cause a misunderstanding. This dialogue is for practice. For important decisions, confirm official guidance as well.
A useful variation
Keep the same purpose, then change the person, time or place to make it your own.
请给我一瓶水。
Use this variation in a situation you genuinely expect to handle.
Listen to the model once, then say it again with one detail from your own situation.
A common trap
For important details, do not decide from what you think you heard; check written information when needed.
不要只背固定句;至少替换一个名词。
This dialogue is for practice. For important decisions, confirm official guidance as well.
Three-step practice
- Open the situation in one short phrase
- Say the central response
- Add one detail of your own
