Family and Relationships in Chinese — Care, Advice and Boundaries

Pletec LLC Editorial Team ·

Personal questions can be more direct in Chinese than in English. You can still set a boundary calmly.

Family member:
(Nǐ hái hǎo ma?)
Learner:
(Hái hǎo. Wǒ xiǎng gēn nǐ shāngliang yí jiàn shì.)

Family member:
(Zhège yǐhòu zài shuō ba.)
Learner:
(Hǎo, wǒmen wǎn yìdiǎn zài tán.)

Takeaway

  • 商量 (shāngliang) means discuss something in order to decide together.
  • You can postpone a topic without rejecting the person.

Keep disagreement about the issue

(Wǒ yǒudiǎn dānxīn…) (“I am a little worried about…”) before naming a concern. It keeps the focus on a plan or situation rather than attacking the person. When emotions rise, agree on a time to return to the topic.

You can also ask (Nǐ xīwàng zěnme zuò?) (“What would you like to do?”). This invites the other person into the decision and is especially useful when there is no single correct answer. Listening is part of the language skill here.

Related: dating and close relationships for the warmer register, and supporting older adults for care conversations.

By the end of this chapter, you can say

(Wǒ jiā yǒu sì kǒu rén. Nǐ jiārén dōu hǎo ma?)

Practical note for this chapter

Optional chapters for relationships, self-care, family life and community. In this chapter, practice giving a short response and then checking what matters.

(Wǒ jiā yǒu sì kǒu rén. Nǐ jiārén dōu hǎo ma?)

(Wǒ jiā yǒu sì kǒu rén. Nǐ jiārén dōu hǎo ma?)

Use this variation in a situation you genuinely expect to handle.
How to use it
Listen to the model once, then say it again with one detail from your own situation.

Turn the model into three conversation turns

(Qǐng jièshào yíxià nǐ de jiārén.)
  2. 2. Say the central response我家有四口人。 (Wǒ jiā yǒu sì kǒu rén. Nǐ jiārén dōu hǎo ma?)
(Wǒ jiā yǒu sì kǒu rén. Nǐ jiā ne?)

A useful variation

Keep the same purpose, then change the person, time or place to make it your own.

(Wǒ jiā yǒu sì kǒu rén. Nǐ jiā ne?)

Use this variation in a situation you genuinely expect to handle.

Listen to the model once, then say it again with one detail from your own situation.

A common trap

For important details, do not decide from what you think you heard; check written information when needed.

(Tán jiārén shí xiān yòng zhōngxìng wèntí, bù tì duìfang zuò jiǎshè.)

This dialogue is for practice. For important decisions, confirm official guidance as well.

Three-step practice

  1. Open the situation in one short phrase
  2. Say the central response
  3. Add one detail of your own
