Four routes for Chinese vocabulary — read, listen, speak, and write

HSK Study Notes Editorial Team ·

To “know” a word blends four different outcomes: recognizing its characters, hearing it in a sentence, producing it when a situation needs it, and writing it in an idea of your own. They do not grow at the same speed. A correct flashcard answer does not guarantee conversation or dictation. This workshop separates the four routes, so that only the weak route returns to review.

Give five words four entrances

Choose five words for the week and record a scene as well as a translation. 方便 is not merely “convenient”; it is also the word in a question about whether a time works.

WordReadListenSpeakWrite
预约预约医生我想预约医生。我想预约___。one line about an appointment
方便这个时间方便这个时间方便吗?___对你方便吗?one possible time
解决解决问题这个办法能解决问题。怎么解决___?one real problem
选择选择一个你想选择哪个?我选择___。reason for a choice
影响影响计划下雨会影响计划。___会影响计划。a changed plan

Reading asks whether you can produce sound and core meaning from the characters. Listening asks whether you can recognize the item without seeing it. Speaking asks whether you can make the blank truthful. Writing asks for one line without translating a complete English sentence. A failure in one column does not erase the other three.

Hear intention before hunting every word

Use this sentence three times:

我想预约医生,但是这个时间不太方便。可以改时间吗?

First, hide the text and note only “appointment,” “time,” and “change.” Second, show the characters, underline 预约医生 and 改时间, and confirm that 不太方便 here means “the time does not work.” Third, hide the text again and mark only one sound that disappears. Trying to transcribe every word loses the message.

Your own recording is enough. The goal is not speed; it is finding meaning before returning to characters.

Speak by changing one slot

Do not wait for a perfect long sentence. Say three short versions, then lengthen only the last one.

FrameFirst versionLast version
我想预约___。医生明天下午的医生
___对你方便吗?明天明天下午三点
___会影响计划。下雨下雨会影响我们的计划。
我选择___。这个我选择那个颜色。

Record version three. Tomorrow, listen and name the slot you changed. This trains recognition of combinations you produced yourself, not only pronunciation. If you stop, simplify one word before looking for a translation.

Read and write to keep usable chunks

Read without a dictionary:

下雨以后,我们决定改时间,因为堵车会影响计划。你觉得下午方便吗?

First say who wants to change what. Then keep only 改时间, 影响计划, and 下午方便. Even without 堵车, the scene is clear. A reading log needs only three lines: scene, two chunks, one short personal sentence.

Write two lines about your day with no more than two new words and one familiar frame. 我想预约医生,但是明天上午不方便。下雨会影响我的计划。 needs you to check only 预约医生 and 影响计划. A sentence you can read aloud tomorrow is more valuable than an elegant translation you cannot use.

Four-route check and HSK

At the end of the week, mix five words: read them without pinyin, understand two recordings, answer two situations, and write two true lines. Give reading, listening, speaking, and writing zero to two points. Below six out of eight, review only the lowest route tomorrow.

Choose five words from your HSK level and complete the same table. A word you can only read needs a listening sentence; a word you hear but cannot say goes into 我想___。 or ___方便吗?. Build scenes in Thematic vocabulary, diagnose errors in Review design, and protect intervals in the study plan.
