Design a Chinese vocabulary review system — diagnose, retrieve, space
Review is not a second reading of a familiar list. It is a short diagnostic: find the first connection that broke, then change tomorrow’s question. If you can translate 预约 but cannot hear it, join it to 医生, or use it in your own schedule, the word is not one single failure. It has one or more missing links. Repair one link at a time instead of marking the whole word “known” or “unknown.”
Meet a word five times, with a different job each time
Return to a new item just after study, the next day, three or four days later, one week later, and one month later. A word that succeeds in print but fails in sound must come back as a sound question, not as the same character-to-translation card.
| When | Front of the card | Success means | If it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| just after study | 预约医生 | say the sound and core meaning | say it once without pinyin |
| next day | yùyuē | name the action and situation | keep sound → meaning |
| day 3 or 4 | “book a medical appointment” | produce 预约医生 | make a gap card |
| one week | 可以改时间吗? | understand and reply | return to a situation card |
| one month | your real schedule | make two true sentences | record the last sentence |
With five new words, ten short recalls are enough. Alternate days with new words and days with review only. If seven or more cards from yesterday stop you, reduce today’s new items to zero, one, or two. That is not a penalty; it restores a pile you can actually retrieve.
Give every error one first tag
Write the first cause, not a long post-mortem. The tag decides the front of the next card.
| Tag | What you notice | Better next question | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| sound | you know the characters but cannot hear or say the item | sound → situation | yùyuē → what do you do? |
| meaning | you know the sound but no scene appears | situation → Chinese | make an appointment → 预约 |
| partner | the meaning is close but the combination is unnatural | gap → chunk | 解决___ → 问题 |
| order | you know the words but the sentence stops | frame → one slot | 我想___。 |
| situation | you know it but it does not arrive when needed | role → response | “Please repeat” → 请再说一遍。 |
*解决时间 is not a reason to reread 解决 repeatedly. It is a partner-word error. Make a contrast card: “change the time” → 改时间. 知道他 mixes a person with information. One corrective sentence, 我不认识他。, is more useful than a dictionary paragraph. The tag makes the next day’s work visible.
Score reading, listening, and speaking separately
Keep three small boxes for each item: R, L, and S. Reading means producing sound and core meaning from the characters. Listening means recognizing the item inside a short sentence before seeing it. Speaking means changing one slot to make a sentence true for you. A word with only R checked is a word your eyes know, not yet a word you can use.
Try 这个时间方便吗?. For R, read it from the characters. For L, hear it without text and explain that someone is asking whether the time suits. For S, change one slot: 明天上午方便吗? or 下午对你方便吗? The empty box—not the entire word—becomes tomorrow’s task.
A closed weekly test
Once a week, mix ten words and close your notes. Do five things:
- Read five items from characters and give their core meaning.
- Complete five chunks: 预约___, 解决___, 改___, 听___, 换___.
- Listen to two short sentences, recorded by you if necessary, and explain them before looking.
- Answer in one sentence for three situations: food, an appointment, travel, or study.
- Make two truthful sentences with the two hardest words and record the last version.
Give one point each for sound and meaning, two for a natural chunk, and three for an understandable personal response. Do not restart a word under seven out of ten. Carry only its first error tag into Monday’s review pile; the parts that worked may keep their longer interval.
Make HSK a review queue, not a race
Take five words from your current HSK level. Beside each, write sound, one chunk, one personal sentence, R/L/S, and the first error tag if there is one. Five words with all six fields are more valuable than fifty unchecked translations. Use Thematic vocabulary to give the words a scene, Chunks and error analysis to repair combinations, and the study plan to protect the intervals.
