Respectful Chinese for Supporting Older Adults

Pletec LLC Editorial Team ·

Care is personal. Speak directly to the older adult whenever possible, ask before helping, and avoid talking about them as if they were not present. For medical decisions, follow appropriate professional guidance.

ChinesePinyinUse
Nín jīntiān gǎnjué zěnmeyàng?Check in respectfully.
Xūyào wǒ bāng nín ma?Offer, do not assume.
Wǒmen màn yìdiǎn, bù zháojí.Reassure without rushing.
Nín xiǎng zuò yíhuìr ma?Offer a choice.

Conversation: offer help while preserving choice

(Nín jīntiān gǎnjué zěnmeyàng?)
(Hái kěyǐ, jiùshì zǒu de yǒudiǎn màn.)
(Méi guānxi, wǒmen màn yìdiǎn. Xūyào wǒ fú nín ma?)

(fú) means to support someone physically. Ask first; some people prefer not to be touched or may want a different kind of help.

Conversation: clarify an instruction

(Yīshēng shuō zhège yào yì tiān chī jǐ cì?)
(Wǒ méi tīng qīng. Wǒmen zài quèrèn yíxià ba.)

It is responsible—not embarrassing—to recheck instructions. Ask for them in writing when that would help.

Use the person’s preference

(nín) is normally appropriate, but the person may prefer a family title or name. Follow their lead.

Related: medical care and pharmacies for appointments and symptoms, and family and relationships for the conversations around them.

A common trap

For important details, do not decide from what you think you heard; check written information when needed.
