Directions and Public Transport in Chinese
For transport, repeat the one detail that matters: the line, stop or transfer. This is more useful than pretending you understood a long explanation.
| Chinese | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Qù…zěnme zǒu? | How do I get to …? |
| Zài nǎr huànchéng? | Where do I transfer? |
| Wǒ zuò guò zhàn le. | I missed my stop. |
Basic dialogue
Traveller:
(Qǐngwèn, qù Rénmín Guǎngchǎng zěnme zǒu?)
Station staff:
(Zuò yī hào xiàn, zài xià yí zhàn huànchéng.)
Traveller:
(Xià yí zhàn huànchéng, duì ma?)
If you miss the stop
Traveller:
(Bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ zuò guò zhàn le.)
Station staff:
(Nǐ kěyǐ zài xià yí zhàn xià chē, zài zuò huílai.)
Takeaway
- Use a map as well as speech.
- Confirm the transfer point aloud before you leave.
Use the route as a shared visual
Show the station name or map, then ask one question at a time: where to transfer, which exit, or how long it takes. Repeat the answer with … (duì ma?) before you start walking; it is far easier to correct a misunderstanding at the station.
